Would there be this much excitement and annoyance if you weren't already hyped about Fallout 3? I have yet to see a post by the major detractors talking about how long it's taking to see the trailer; they're thoroughly jaded and wary, and lack any hype. Bethesda didn't lure you here and isn't using any devices to stir up these threads except for the latent excitement of the fans. These posts extend even before the "Please Stand By" pic was put online; people have been joining the forums for the first time just to talk about how much they're anticipating this trailer. All Bethesda did was put up a countdown and answer a handful of questions; the rest is all you.

Hype is a state of mind; and it's only in a fan's mind that it can exist.

However, a good marketing department plans to take advantage of psychological factors. For instance, the sheer rabidness of the Fallout fandom would be common knowledge to the Bethesda PR people by now.

As such, they decide they can create a "spectacle." It doesn't hurt anybody (which is an added plus, since artificial spectacles often can), and in the meantime, they continue to rack up interest - which, in turn, makes people more likely to invest in them, stores to pre-order more units, etc., etc.
